It’s official, the funding request for Adam’s treatment in Germany has this morning been approved! After chasing for an update, I’ve just received the following response …
Some good news and an update in relation to your funding request for immunotherpay in Germany for pt AB. NHS Surrey’s IFR panel formally considered your funding request on 4th January and made the recommendation that the request should be forwarded to the South East Coast Cancer Drugs Fund (SEC CDF) panel for consideration.
The SEC CDF panel met this morning and agreed to approve funding for the requested five cycles of treatment - I attach the formal response letter in relation to this.
As this case is slightly different in that the patient has already received treatment ( I believe they have now had the 5 cycles) we will need to liaise re how the funding will work in relation to this, I am about to email his father to inform him of the decision.
If you have any further queries please do not hesitate to contact me.
We’ve now got to hope they are pragmatic about how to refund the monies. We transferred €80,000 to the hospital before they would start treatment, and the hospital maintain a ledger of every separate item that is billed to our account … which by now will be A LOT of paperwork. The most logical and simplest process from our perspective would be for the full €80,000 to be reimbursed to us i.e. the charity, and the contract is then between the hospital in Greifswald and NHS Surrey/South East Coast Cancer Drugs Fund. They can have the full itemised paperwork, and receive any refund (or otherwise) that might be due once we’ve completed treatment in a fortnight. I think (though I don’t know for certain) that this is how it would have worked had the request been approved in the first place back in June of last year. I do not want to find myself in a situation where we are claiming back for each and every consultation, injection, EEG, blood test, etc. etc. etc. So please don’t ask me to do that … please don’t.
